A brief heads up on the new covenant
Concrete targets and greater accountability for everyone who makes, buys, uses and disposes of packaging make the National Packaging Covenant much more demanding.
Overall, 65% of packaging must be recycled, including:
70 to 80% of paper and cardboard
50 to 60% of glass
60 to 65% of steel
70 to 75% of aluminium
30 to 35% of plastics.
The new covenant also sets out key performance indicators for companies dealing with packaging that include the total weight of non-recyclable packaging, resources used to produce packaging, onsite collection and recycling activities and facilities, and packaging's post consumer recycled content.
New Packaging Council of Australia board member and Confoil CEO, Dr Wolfgang Rosenkotter, said the targets were challenging but achievable.
'We've stayed close to the Covenant since it was first put in place so Confoil is ready to help customers reach their target,' he said.
